The count uses only whole blocks that fit inside your size. Cutting a jali breaks the pattern, so the leftover space is usually filled with mortar, plaster or solid brick at the edges.

Jali bricks for walls that need air, light and privacy

A jali wall does three jobs at once: it shades, it lets air through, and it stops a direct view. These are the places those jobs matter most.

  • Stair walls

    A stair core with a jali wall stays lit in the day and does not trap hot air at the top landing.

  • Terrace parapets

    Privacy from the next roof without blocking the breeze. Cap the top with a sloped coping.

  • Boundary walls

    Solid brick to about four feet, then a band of jali above it. Private at eye level, open above.

  • West and south facades

    A jali a short distance in front of a window cuts direct sun and glare on the hottest sides.

What is a terracotta jali?

A terracotta jali is a perforated block of fired clay. Laid in rows like brickwork, the blocks make a screen wall that lets air and light through while blocking a direct view. Ours are moulded and kiln-fired at our factory in Ambala district.

What size are your jali bricks?

All 13 designs are 8 × 8 × 2.5 inches, about 203 × 203 × 64 mm. Because the terracotta and white breeze block ranges share this module, you can mix them in one wall.

How many jali bricks do I need per square foot?

An 8 × 8 inch face covers 0.44 sq ft, so a wall with no joints takes 2.25 blocks per sq ft. With a 10 mm mortar joint it comes to about 2.04 blocks per sq ft. Add around 5% for breakage. The jali brick calculator on this site works it out for your exact wall.

What is the jali price per piece?

Can a jali wall be load-bearing?

No. A 2.5 inch jali wall is a screen. Build it inside a frame of RCC, steel or solid brick and do not rest a slab or beam on it. For tall or long panels, ask your engineer about tie bars in the joints.

How is a terracotta jali wall laid?

Like brickwork, in a cement and sand mortar, usually in stack bond so the pattern lines up. Keep the joints the same width, check each row with a level and string line, and wipe mortar off the faces before it sets.

What is the difference between your terracotta jali and breeze blocks?

The terracotta jali range is kiln-fired clay in its natural orange-red. The breeze block range has a white finish and different patterns. Both are 8 × 8 × 2.5 inches.

Can I see the jali before I order?

Yes. Visit the factory at Village Kakkar Majra, Distt. Ambala (Mon to Sat, 9 AM to 6 PM), or ask on WhatsApp for close-up photos and a sample block.

Terracotta jali: notes from the kiln

A jali is a screen with a pattern cut through it. Indian builders have used them for centuries, in carved stone on palaces and tombs and in plain perforated brick on houses, because a screen in a hot country solves several problems at once. It shades the wall behind it, it lets air move, and it lets people inside see out while people outside cannot see in.

A terracotta jali brick does the same job as a modular block. You lay it in mortar like brickwork, row on row, and the pattern builds up as the wall rises. Golden Bricks Co. moulds and fires these blocks at its kiln in Village Kakkar Majra, Distt. Ambala, alongside its brick tiles and face bricks.

Terracotta jali or clay jally: is there a difference?

No. Jali, jaali and jally are spellings of the same word. Clay jally, clay jali and terracotta jali all mean a perforated block of fired clay. Our clay jally guide goes deeper into how a jali handles sun, air and rain.

One block size for every design

All our designs measure 8 × 8 × 2.5 inches (about 203 × 203 × 64 mm). With no joint that is 2.25 blocks per square foot; with a 10 mm joint it is about 2.04. Because the size never changes, you can switch designs without re-planning the wall, or mix the terracotta jali bricks with the white breeze block jali.

Choosing a design

  • For the most light and air: Opal Jali or Petal Jali.
  • For a balance of light and privacy: Flower Jali or Square Jali.
  • For walls that face driving rain, or where privacy matters most: Camp Jali, with its hooded face.

A jali wall is a screen, not a structure
